This week I had 3 new students to start with. A and J never had mardarin class before, S took some classes online by herself, I think her level also is almost 0.
Our first class is pinyin and greetings.
I think for most foreigners sheng mu(Consonant)is more difficult than yunmu(Vowels),the most difficult one is j,q; z,c,s, zh,ch,sh, r. They don’t know how to roll the tone.As for tone, the third and fouth tone are difficult for them. So I will spend more time on these things. I told them that use hand gesture will help them with the tones.
Different between z,c : z breath in,; c is breath out, same as d, t : d is breath in, and t is breath out. Put hand in front of month, c, t you can feel air breath hand. Z is tooth tighly close, also there is little vibration around tooth. C : there is little space between upper tooth and lower tooth, it’s why the air will go out. S: is gentle version of Z., also breath in, but tooth is not tightly close.
E sometimes people will pronounce as English e, Not Chinese “e”.
I found sometimes it's easier to teach foreigners speak mandarin than Cantonese. But for Cantonese.I don't need teach them how to read and write through.
